Northern Greece Study Tour

Date:
11 April 2013 - 16 April 2013
Cost and flight information will be available summer 2012
Lecturer:
James McDonaugh

When people think of mainland Greece, Athens probably comes to mind and perhaps a few classical sites nearby. Few venture to Northern Greece and know about the wealth of art and architecture that awaits: from the stunning treasures of Alexander the Great and his family to beautifully preserved Byzantine churches. Greece is a country of great natural beauty and northern Greece is home to some of the most dramatic landscapes in the country, not least Mount Olympus, which is actually a whole range of mountains with beautiful walks and waterfalls.

We will base ourselves in Thessaloniki, Greece’s second city, in a lovely boutique hotel overlooking sea. The city contains one of Europe’s greatest archaeological museums and a host of beautiful byzantine churches. You will do a series of day trips and these will include visits to Vergina to see the treasures of the Macedonian Empire, Ancient Pella one time Macedonian capital, the ancient city of Dion, Naousa where Aristotle taught Alexander the Great and Mount Olympus itself.

You will venture down into central Greece to visit the extraordinary monasteries of the Meteora, which date back to the 15th century and are among the most stunningly situated buildings in the world. The themes will be Roman, Macedonian and Byzantine Greece and these will follow on very well from our exploration of classical Greece in 2011.
